Every disc of the Helen is cut from full-grain leather: top-layer cowhide with its natural grain left whole. A hide is made of layers, and the outermost one, the grain, has the tightest and strongest fibers. Lower grades of leather are sanded, coated or embossed to hide marks and look uniform, and they lose some of their strength in the process. Full-grain keeps the original surface, pores and all, so it lasts longer, breathes, and wears in with use instead of peeling the way coated leathers can.

That strength matters on a strap like this one. The Helen is not one long piece of leather but a chain of small discs, linked by hand with metal rings, and at every link the leather carries the weight of your bag. Cut from the densest part of the hide, the discs hold their shape around the rings day after day. Each cut edge is then hand-painted, a slow finishing step that seals the edge so it stays smooth, resists fraying and keeps moisture out, and gives the strap the clean, upscale look that earns compliments.

Because nothing has been sanded away, every disc shows a little of the hide's character: natural grain, faint growth lines and small variations in shading. No two straps are exactly alike. Full-grain leather also develops a patina, deepening in color and taking on a soft sheen as it is handled, so the Helen gains character the longer it is carried. The eight colors, Sapphire, Peppermint, Coffee, Brown, Black, Dark Teal, Trench and Caramel, share their names with Minooy bag colors, and each comes with silver, bronze or gold rings and hooks chosen to match.

Full-grain leather needs very little care. Wipe the strap with a soft, dry cloth after use, and if it gets wet, let it dry naturally, away from direct heat. Every few months, work in a small amount of leather conditioner to keep the leather supple, testing it first on the back of one disc. Avoid soaking the strap or leaving it in strong sun for long periods, and store it flat or hanging so the discs keep their shape and the rings stay free of scratches.
